Patients suffering from GERD can now benefit from comprehensive testing and specialized treatment options from the nation’s leader in heartburn treatment centers.

LANCASTER, Ohio (January 13, 2012) – Yesterday, Fairfield Medical Center (FMC) opened the Fairfield Medical Heartburn Center, which will provide state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for residents of Southeastern Ohio. This center is being offered in partnership with Legato Health Systems, the nation’s leader in heartburn treatment centers.

Legato operates 30 such centers nationwide, using a multidisciplinary approach and giving local practitioners access to nationally recognized specialists resulting in optimal patient care.

“This new center allows us to use a collaborative, patient-centered model of care to provide options for people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease,” said Dr. Elwood Martin, general surgeon at FMC.

Heartburn is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD as it is commonly called. GERD is one of the most common chronic diseases in the U.S., with about 30 percent of the U.S. population suffering from the condition. Although GERD may seem harmless, it is a serious lifetime disease that can cause severe symptoms and long-term risks. Left untreated, GERD can lead to more serious problems, such as esophagitis, ulcers on the esophagus and esophageal cancer.

“We all work as a team providing the best care possible utilizing a proven disease management process and Legato’s nationally recognized protocols,” said Tina Cass, nurse coordinator for the Fairfield Medical Heartburn Center. Cass, who is a registered nurse and certified clinical nurse leader, will serve as an advocate for patients and referring physicians to ensure continuity of care for patients.
