All students who will be at FMC, Job Shadowing or doing Clinical Internships, during influenza season must show proof of receiving the seasonal & H1N1 vaccines or must wear a mask during the season. The end date will be determined by our facility.

Job Shadowing at Fairfield Medical Center provides individuals and students experiential learning opportunities for those interested in the health care field. Observational experiences are designed to help individuals learn about health career options and to help gather information in a variety of areas. This program offers a 4-8 hour, once-a-month experience in a specified area at Fairfield Medical Center. Job shadowing participants do not partake in any hands-on patient care and are there to observe only.

Program participants have the opportunity to:

  • Identify career interests
  • Experience a workplace setting
  • Observe duties and responsibilities of health care employees
  • Observe interpersonal communication skills in a professional atmosphere
  • Develop a relationship with healthcare professionals

Individuals who are eligible for the observational experiences:

  • College students
  • Those searching and interested in a second career
  • High school juniors and seniors

Observational Opportunities

Fairfield Medical Center offers shadowing experiences in the following departments: 

  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy                                 
  • Social Work
  • Speech Pathology                              
  • Respiratory Therapy

Job Shadowing Schedule

The Job Shadow dates for 2010 are the last Tuesday of each month.

If you need more than eight hours of observation, you must still begin on one of the designated shadowing dates. Further scheduling can occur after the original date, if space allows.

How to Apply for Shadowing

Students and individuals doing observational hours at Fairfield Medical Center are required to complete the following:

    • Student Application including confidentiality statement and liability release statement.
    • Reference Manual and completed quiz
    • Two-step TB skin test or two consecutive years of a one-step and full documentation. TB tests may be obtained at your primary care physician or at the Fairfield County Health Department. To schedule an appointment at the health department, call 740-689-6758. 

All forms must be turned in two weeks prior to the requested shadowing date. You will be notified by e-mail or a phone call if you are accepted to observe in the hospital. Remember that there is a limited amount of shadowing experiences for each day offered.

Dress Code and Conduct

Fairfield Medical Center wants all participants to have an engaging and positive experience while shadowing. As acting members of our team, FMC expects that all participants carry themselves in a respectful and professional manner. Doing this will enhance their experience and will make for a positive reflection of that student.

Dress code is an important aspect of our culture. Appropriate attire conveys professionalism, maximizes safety and demonstrates courtesy. Clothing and appearance must be neat and clean. The specific guidelines are: 

    • Please wear a collared shirt or button down with khaki or black pants
    • No sweatpants, jeans or shorts.
    • No open-toed shoes, sandals, or flip flops
    • Tennis shoes may be worn if they are in good condition
    • No tank tops
    • All body piercing and tattoos must be covered
    • Hair must be clean and pulled back if in a clinical area

Clinical internships provide individuals the opportunity to gain skills and experience in a health care setting at Fairfield Medical Center. Students can fulfill hours and clinical requirements for their program using the FMC facilities. All clinical internships that include active participation and “hands-on” work also require an affiliation agreement between an individual’s program and the hospital. If you are interested in doing an internship, please contact your school program to find out if there currently is a contract or affiliation agreement in place.

How to Apply for Clinical Internships

Everyone interested in an internship must complete the following requirements:  

  • Student Application includes release of liability and confidentiality statement.
  • Affiliation agreement between program and hospital
  • Reference Manual and completed quiz
  • Documentation of a two-step TB skin test or two consecutive years of a one-step. TB tests may be obtained at your primary care physician or at the Fairfield County Health Department. To schedule an appointment at the health department, call 740-689-6758.
  • Immunization confirmation statement that your immunizations are up to date, on file and that you are free of infectious disease
  • Criminal background check confirmation statement that your background check is clear or falls within our permissible criteria (signed and sent it by school or program)
  • Liability insurance provided by program or individual

Please print out and complete all of the above forms. You must have the forms sent in to Fairfield Medical Center two weeks prior to starting your experience. Please mail to:

You will not begin your clinical experience unless all of the documents and forms are properly completed and submitted. We will try to accommodate your request, but you are not guaranteed placement or the dates requested. You will be notified upon acceptance of your documents and application.
