Ubbing Recipient of James R. Castle Distinguished Service Award

LANCASTER, Ohio (June 14, 2012) – Fairfield Medical Center President and CEO Mina Ubbing was named as the recipient of the James R. Castle Distinguished Service Award at the Ohio Hospital Association’s (OHA) 11th annual recognition dinner June 12.

The James R. Castle Distinguished Service Award recognizes CEOs or senior managers of OHA member organizations for their professional attainments as outstanding manager, leader, mentor, teacher or service to the community. This award specifically honors an individual whose professional attainments embody qualities of an outstanding leader or mentor for service to the health community. It is named for OHA’s president and CEO from 1989 through 2011.

“Mina is a great leader and health care advocate at the state, regional and local level,” said James R. Castle as he presented the award to Ubbing. “It is a great personal honor for me to present this award to such a deserving person.”

Ubbing was the immediate past chair of the OHA Board of Trustees and has held executive positions in administration and finance in Ohio hospitals since 1979, holding her current CEO position since 2001. She has also held adjunct faculty positions in management and finance since 1990 with Ohio University-Lancaster and Franklin University in Columbus.

Her service to OHA has also included chairing the search committee for a successor to former president and CEO Jim Castle and leading a task force for hospital input to the state budget process. Among successes at FMC, Ubbing helped establish the FMC Foundation; formed an advisory committee for community input and introduced concepts of Six Sigma, a process improvement initiative; and brought HeartMath, a stress management program to the organization.

In her community, Ubbing has chaired the Fairfield County Foundation, the Fairfield County United Way Campaign, the Lancaster-Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce and the Route 33 Development Alliance. Currently she chairs the Chamber Board for the second time and the Ohio University-Lancaster Coordinating Council. She is also vice chair of the Lancaster Festival Board and treasurer of the Ohio Valley Hospital Consortium group purchasing partnership, is a member of the Fairfield National Bank Advisory Board, the Partnership for Excellence Board, and the Administrative Resources Incorporated board, which owns a national group purchasing organization.

Ubbing was honored in the category of Health Care Leadership Awards along with A. Malachi “Mal” Mixon III, Chair Emeritus of the Cleveland Clinic Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, and Sister Marjorie Bosse, Director of Catholic Health Partners. Hospitals across the state gathered to honor the Health Care Leadership Award recipients as well as 62 nominees for the Healthcare Worker of the Year for which FMC’s Charli Dresbach, discharge planner, was one of four finalists.
