LANCASTER, Ohio (June 15, 2011) – When patients come to Fairfield Medical Center (FMC) with congestive heart failure, thanks to Dr. Shantanu Sinha, Interventional Cardiologist, they now have more options when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.

Recently, Dr. Sinha had the opportunity to evaluate a patient that presented with recurrent heart failure symptoms, despite having normal pumping function of the heart. After considering several reasons for the patent's illness it was determined that the signs and symptoms were most consistent with cardiac amyloidosis. This is a rare condition caused by deposits of an abnormal protein (amyloid) in the heart tissues. Such deposits make it difficult for the heart to work properly. Diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis requires a cardiac biopsy, which previously would have required the patient to be transferred to a larger Columbus hospital.

“To determine whether or not patients diagnosed with amyloidosis can be treated with chemotherapy or even benefit from a heart transplant, a cardiac biopsy is required,” said Dr. Sinha. “The cardiac biopsy is taken by a catheter into a vein in the neck and down to the heart. It is certainly a benefit to patients when it comes to the convenience of coming to Fairfield Medical Center for this procedure versus driving to Columbus.”

Dr. Sinha performed the first cardiac biopsy at FMC making it more convenient for patients and their family. Because of physicians like Dr. Sinha that have complex and extensive training, Fairfield Medical Center is able to provide a comprehensive and thorough cardiac program to our local community.
