    Open Heart Surgery

    Incisions about the size of an hour key

Pre-Surgery/Procedural Instructions

Bring your insurance card and a valid photo ID. 

Bring any legal custodial or guardianship documents. 

Bring a list of medications and/or supplements that you are taking that includes the dose and schedule.

Do not eat or drink, including coffee and/or water, after midnight the evening before your surgery or procedure. 

You will be instructed by your physicians or pre-surgery nurse as to which medications to take on the morning of your surgery.

Bathe and brush your teeth on the morning of your surgery, but be careful not to swallow.

Do not wear any jewelry the day of the surgery, including wedding rings and body piercings.

Leave all valuables at home, including money.

Do not wear any makeup, and remove all nail polish.

Do not wear contact lenses.  

Wear loose-fitting clothing or pajamas that won’t irritate your incision.

Please be available by phone on the day of your surgery in case there would be a change in your time of arrival.

You will need to arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to your surgery/procedure, during your surgery/procedure, to drive you home and to stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery/procedure. You may not drive yourself home.


Please note, our pastoral care staff is available to spend time with you and your family and address your spiritual needs before surgery, offering comfort and hope. Feel free to inform your nurse if you would like your spiritual needs addressed before your surgery or procedure and one of our chaplains will be honored to offer you this important ministry.
