Our goal is to keep you at an “acceptable” pain level. The relief of pain includes both drug and non-drug interventions. Your physician may order medications to help control your pain. Medications may be taken at various times of the day. It is suggested for chronic or continuous pain that the medications be taken around the clock. If pain returns before the next dose is due, consult your physician for recommendations. At Fairfield Medical Center, we believe in limiting the amount of drug interventions used, and utilize non-drug interventions when possible.
The non-drug interventions include:
- Repositioning yourself when lying in bed and when up in a chair
- Relaxation techniques such as imagery and deep breathing
- Decreasing or eliminating the amount of noise or light in your environment
- Diversion activities such as listening to soft music or participating in a craft
- Heat or ice therapy
Each individual’s pain is different, and a combination of drug and non-drug interventions may be needed.
