Fairfield Medical Center Introduces Ivy O'Neal, Oncology Nurse Navigator

LANCASTER, Ohio (August 24, 2012) – Fairfield Medical Center is proud to announce a new addition to the cancer care team. Ivy O’Neal has joined FMC as an oncology nurse navigator, along with Joyce Cox who serves in a similar capacity to help patients and their families coordinate services and obtain needed support to ease their cancer journey.

O’Neal is a registered nurse who recently took on this role to offer specialized care for lung, head and neck cancer patients in the Lancaster community and surrounding areas. She has more than six years of experience working with cancer patients and lives in the Lancaster community.

As an oncology nurse navigator, O’Neal works closely with physicians and patients with the overall goal of improving the patient’s cancer care experience.

“When someone is diagnosed with cancer it can be one of the scariest times in their lives,” said O’Neal. “The most rewarding part of my job is to ease the burden of a cancer diagnosis for my patients and their families. If I can make even one part of their journey a little easier than I feel I have made a difference.”

She obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Marshall University and also received an associate’s degree in nursing at the University of Rio Grande. O’Neal is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, the Columbus Chapter of Oncology Nursing Society, and the Academy of Oncology Nurse Navigators. She is also a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Recently, O’Neal has been heavily involved with coordinating the Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil to be held on Nov. 13 in FMC Assembly Room 2 and the Tranquility Garden. This event is dedicated to those affected by lung cancer and is a way for people in our community to come together for awareness, remembrance and support. A reception will be offered at 6 p.m. and the vigil will begin at 6:30 p.m. An illumination ceremony will also be offered at 7 p.m. A guest speaker will be featured and the public is encouraged to attend at no cost.

Fairfield Medical Center offers a comprehensive cancer care program that is accredited by the American College of Surgeons. For more information regarding the services offered by FMC’s oncology nurse navigators, call Joyce Cox at (740) 687-8863 or Ivy O’Neal at (740) 689-6889.
