Fairfield Medical Center Forms Clinical Relationship with Nationwide Children’s Hospital

LANCASTER, Ohio (April 4, 2013) – A new clinical partnership between Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Fairfield Medical Center will bring additional resources to local pediatric and neonatal patients. The affiliation was announced Wednesday at the annual State of the Center by FMC President and Chief Executive Officer Mina Ubbing.

“It is our responsibility to make sure the communities we serve have access to the best possible care. This affiliation will go a long way to strengthen a relationship with Nationwide Children’s Hospital that we have enjoyed for a very long time,” Ubbing said. “By combining the resources and expertise of Nationwide Children’s with those of FMC’s, we can bring our patients a higher level of pediatric care and service.”

As part of the affiliation, FMC physicians will be able to directly consult with specialists at Nationwide Children’s in Columbus. FMC’s medical and nursing staff will also benefit from training and mentoring programs as well as state-of-the-art pediatric research and clinical trials.

According to Gil Peri, vice president of regional development at Nationwide Children’s, "We are pleased to collaborate with Fairfield Medical Center to enhance neonatal and pediatric care in Fairfield County and the surrounding communities. Our neonatologists and pediatric sub-specialists are looking forward to working with the hospital and community physicians to provide care close to home."

Nationwide Children’s currently provides telemedicine capabilities in the FMC nursery.  Telemedicine, also known as videoconferencing, enhances accessibility and communication between physicians through real-time videoconferencing, allowing the referral center physicians to visually assess the patient and review diagnostic images and data in real-time. This technology enables specialists at Nationwide Children’s to view newborns with exceptional clarity, examine detailed X-rays, view lab results and consult with pediatric physicians in Lancaster.

“Any staff member who has contact with a pediatric patient benefits from this relationship. Staff have the opportunity for hands-on experience, education and resources with a facility that specializes in pediatric illnesses and conditions,” explained Sandi Wagner, manager of the FMC pediatric unit. “While we are raising our own level of clinical excellence at FMC, we are also building stronger relationships with Nationwide Children’s staff so that patient transfers go as smoothly as possible if a child requires highly specialized pediatric care. Ultimately, the partnership allows us to provide safe quality care to our pediatric patients right here in our community.”
