FAIRFIELD MEDICAL CENTER OFFERS NEW ACID REFLUX TREATMENT

LANCASTER, Ohio (January 28, 2014) – Fairfield Medical Center is one of three hospitals in Central Ohio to now offer a new, FDA-approved treatment called the LINX® System for people who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The LINX is a small, flexible band of magnets enclosed in titanium beads that is surgically placed around the esophagus, just above the stomach. The magnetic attraction between the beads helps keep the weak lower esophageal sphincter closed to prevent acid and bile from flowing back from the stomach into the esophagus. The LINX is the only FDA-approved device for the treatment of GERD, which affects one in five U.S. adults. A clinical study conducted by Torax Medical, the manufacturer of the LINX, found that 91 percent of patients who received the LINX treatment achieved freedom from daily GERD medication and 100 percent eliminated severe regurgitation.

“The paradigm for the diagnosis and treatment of GERD is changing,” said Dr. Elwood Martin, medical director for the Fairfield Medical Heartburn Center. “As we learn more about the disease, we are recognizing that every patient should have an individualized treatment plan based on their disease. The LINX is the next logical step as we expand and revolutionize the treatment of GERD.”

Dr. Martin was one of only 80 surgeons in the U.S. to be selected by Torax Medical to go through the training and be certified to surgically place the device. Residents can learn more about the LINX by attending one of two, upcoming seminars at Fairfield Medical Center that will be led by Dr. Martin. The seminars will be held from 9-10 a.m. Feb. 8 and 6:30-7:30 p.m. March 4 in Assembly Room 3. Residents are encouraged to RSVP by calling (740) 687-8007.

The Fairfield Medical Heartburn Center, in collaboration with Legato Medical Systems, opened two years ago and has helped numerous patients identify and treat GERD. To learn more about the LINX or to receive a free nurse consultation, call (740) 689-6486.
