FMC Opens New Emery and Evelyn Williams Graduate Medical Education Resource Center

LANCASTER, Ohio (June 22, 2012) – Fairfield Medical Center is proud to announce the opening of the Emery and Evelyn Williams Graduate Medical Education Resource Center, located at the mid level and ground level of the North Entrance of FMC.

The new center, which opened June 20, provides classrooms and support facilities for FMC’s family medicine residency program and its new internal medicine residency program that will be launched in July. Both programs are co-sponsored by the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

FMC’s graduate medical education programs have grown immensely in a very short time.  “Because of the rapid expansion of all clinical education at FMC, space has become a premium,” said Dr. Troy Hampton, program director for the family medicine residency program. “We needed space specifically dedicated to medical training—particularly as growth of the programs continues.”

This new resource center offers a dedicated area for residents to train, including technology training on computerized patient order entry, videoconferencing and hands-on learning from FMC physician instructors. With the addition of the internal medicine residency program, FMC will now house 18 residents -- six internal medicine residents and 12 family practice residents.

Because physicians tend to practice within a 25-mile radius of where they train, the programs were founded at FMC in an effort to recruit physicians to the area. “The residency programs have a huge impact on Fairfield Medical Center and the community in the fact that we are training high-quality physicians who could stay in our community,” said Dr. Troy Edwards, program director for the internal medicine residency program. “It allows them to build relationships with staff and our community in general.”

Former FMC patients Emery and Evelyn Williams donated $100,000 to fund part of the Graduate Medical Education Resource Center on behalf of the tremendous care they received at FMC. During the ribbon cutting ceremony on June 20, the Williams announced a planned gift of an additional $400,000, which brings their total gifts to $530,000 and makes them the largest donor to the FMC Foundation to date. “We are simple people; we have led a simple life,” Emery Williams said. “We are not rich, but we have been blessed and we want to thank Fairfield Medical Center and all of their great staff for the wonderful care that we have received.”

FMC Foundation Executive Director Ricki Chenault commented, “Such a kind donation speaks volumes about the care we give here at FMC and I can’t thank the Williams enough for their generosity.”
