FMC Bariatric Program Receives Center of Excellence Accreditation
In March 2021, Fairfield Medical Center’s Bariatric Services Program received national recognition from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), officially certifying the service as a Center of Excellence. This achievement means that patients in the region who are interested in pursuing surgical weight loss can receive compassionate, high-quality care from a nationally acclaimed facility without leaving their community or traveling to large city centers.
“This accomplishment reflects our program’s ability to hold up to rigorous review, meeting and exceeding national quality standards,” said President and CEO John R. “Jack” Janoso, Jr. “It is a true testament to FMC’s passion, expertise and dedication to delivering outstanding patient care.”
The FMC Bariatric Services Team is comprised of several experts, including an experienced bariatric surgeon and physician assistant, program coordinators, insurance verification specialists, registered dietitians and nurses specifically trained in the provision of bariatric care. This multidisciplinary, collaborative approach ensures successful surgical outcomes, while extensive education prior to their procedure provides patients with the tools they need to acheive long-term success. For many, the weight loss associated with bariatric surgery is life-changing, leading to dramatically improved health and a better quality of life.
“We do this procedure for the medical reasons on paper, but what we’re really trying to do is help people get their life back,” said bariatric program medical director and surgeon Timothy Custer, MD. “It’s great to hear that someone’s high blood pressure resolved, their diabetes went away, their joint pain has improved – but when they tell us they got on the floor and played with their kids or grandkids, or that they rode a roller coaster for the first time in 10 years, that’s what this is really about.”
In addition to changing lives for the better, Fairfield Medical Center’s comprehensive Bariatric Program joins an elite group of surgery centers committed to improving the safety, quality and surgical outcomes of bariatric procedures across the country. By participating in the MBSAQIP’s national data registry, these dedicated groups uphold the highest standards of patient care while identifying and promoting opportunities for quality improvement.
“For our team and this program to be recognized as leaders in the field of bariatric surgery is incredible,” Dr. Custer shared. “Our ultimate goal is to provide our patients with the comprehensive, personalized care they deserve – this accreditation reaffirms that we’re doing exactly that.”
