Music to Your Ears Experience Music Therapy at FMC

Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based practice that uses music to accomplish individualized goals. For example, in our Maternity Department, music therapy can be used to increase relaxation for mothers and babies. The therapy session is led by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. If you’re interested in scheduling a session, speak to your nurse.


Music Therapy for You and Your Baby

Fairfield Medical Center offers music therapy to expecting mothers and their support person for a variety of reasons, including to:

  • Reduce pain perception
  • Increase relaxation
  • Learn lullabies and increase family bonding with your baby
  • Select recorded music for labor or your infant
  • Create special musical gifts for your infant

The Soothing Nature of Music Before Birth and Beyond

The use of music during pregnancy and after birth can provide the following benefits:

  • Appropriate stimulation of the baby’s auditory system
  • Increased brain processing of information received from auditory system
  • Familiar music and voices can further increase comfort and relaxation, especially when using familiar sounds
  • Increases bonding between infant and singer
  • Continuing singing into toddler-hood can support developing language
