FMC and Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, Inc. Celebrate National BRA Day

Hospital BRA DayLANCASTER, Ohio (Sept. 22, 2014) – To raise awareness for National BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day on Wednesday, Oct. 15, Fairfield Medical Center and Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, Inc. are co-sponsoring a bra drive for a local women’s shelter.

From now until Friday, Oct. 10, residents can donate new bras at the following Lancaster locations:

• Fairfield Medical Center Café, 401 N. Ewing St.
• Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, 135 N. Ewing St., Suite 202
• Fairfield Medical Cancer Resource Center, 616 Forest Rose Ave.
• River View Surgery Center, 2401 N. Columbus St.
• Ohio University-Lancaster, 1570 Granville Pike

The goal of BRA Day is to ensure that all breast cancer patients are fully informed of their reconstruction options and are supported by a team of medical professionals working together for the patient's best interest. According to the Women’s Health Act of 1998, if an insurance company covers a mastectomy, it must also cover reconstruction. However, research shows that 70 percent of women eligible for breast reconstruction are not even informed of their options.

"BRA Day is a critical step in closing the loop for patients with breast cancer,” said Jason Lichten, M.D., board certified plastic surgeon. “Educating all of my patients about their options is incredibly important to me. We are participating with BRA Day efforts to promote education and awareness of reconstruction options. Although I understand that reconstruction is not the right choice for every patient, I firmly believe that it is every woman's right to make an educated decision for herself."
