Graduate Nurse Residency Orientation

FMC’s graduate nurse residency orientation serves as a bridge for new nurses between school and clinical practice. The program assists new nurses with the challenges you will face with starting a new job at a new facility, adjusting to a high-stress work environment, managing insecurity and fear, and the diverse emotions involved with the first year of nursing. 

You will be provided with a strong support system, including:

Nurses who have been licensed for less than a year are automatically entered into the program upon being hired or obtaining their license.  

The year-long program consists of monthly online and in-person learning requirements designed to fit around your busy schedule.

Program stages include:

• Graduate nurse orientation
• Structured unit orientation focused on critical thinking, clinical reasoning and skill acquisition
• Clinical enrichment classes
• Professional development classes

The goal of the graduate nurse residency program is to identify and address clinical and interpersonal knowledge gaps. Some specific areas covered include: 

• Professional communication

• Delegation
• Critical thinking and clinical decision making skills
• Building confidence as a new nurse
• Coping with death and dying
• Dealing with difficult patients and families
• Ready, Set, Code drills
• Skill development through hands-on demonstrations and simulation
