Experience an Educated Childbirth

As your due date draws near and your excitement begins to build, knowing what to expect can help you focus more fully on your birthing experience. We provide a variety of educational classes to make your experience one to remember.

Tour the FMC Maternity Unit

Take a virtual tour of our maternity unit and learn about what to expect during your childbirth experience at Fairfield Medical Center.

Our class offerings include:

  • Available as either a two- or three-day series, this class explores labor and birth, pain control options, relaxation techniques, childbirth recovery, cesarean birth and newborn care. You will also be given a tour of the Maternity Unit. A full version of the newborn care class is included in the childbirth series.

  • This detailed information session for expectant families is provided by lactation nurses to increase breastfeeding success.

    • Signs and symptoms of adequate intake
    • Common problems and solutions

  • Expectant grandparents can learn about the latest trends in childbirth, as well as SIDS awareness and newborn safety.

    Cost: Free

    • Changes in childbirth
    • New ideas in child rearing
    • Grandparenting roles
    • Safety proofing your home
    • Basic baby care information
    • Tour the Maternity Unit
  • Learn basic newborn care, such as feeding, burping, coping with illness, bathing, sleeping, crying and typical newborn characteristics. This class is also included as part of the Childbirth Education Series.

    • Bathing techniques
    • Feeding options and preparation
    • How to dress your baby
    • Diapering methods
    • What kind of products to use
    • Crying – what’s it all about?
    • Sleeping patterns
    • Signs and symptoms of illness
    • How to take your baby’s temperature
    • Using a bulb syringe
    • Do’s and don’ts of pacifiers
  • This class will cover what to expect during a cesarean birth.

    • Preoperative procedures
    • Anesthesia options
    • Delivery room procedures
    • Postoperative care
    • Going home prepared
    • View a cesarean birth movie
    • Tour the Maternity Unit
  • Safety is a concern for any parent. This class will teach you basic information on CPR, how to perform infant and child CPR, and how to perform infant and child choking first aid.

    Cost: $35 per person

  • This class is geared for children 3-6 years of age and focuses on teaching infant safety with hands-on practice and education. Your child will go on a tour of the Maternity Unit and participate in fun activities.

    • Roles of big brother or sister
    • Importance of handwashing
    • How to handle a newborn
    • Ways to help with baby care tasks
  • This class reviews the key aspects of childbirth education for families with previous birth experience.

    Cost: Free

  • Our class offers support for parents and caregivers of substance-exposed newborns as we learn about their specialized care needs. Registration is required. For more information or to register, please call the childbirth educator at 740-687-8218.
