Seven Steps to Help Stop the Spread of COVID-19

Article originally published on November 12, 2020.

These seven steps are important ways that you can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections, including the flu.

Get Vaccinated

Vaccination is our most powerful tool in overcoming coronavirus. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective when it comes to preventing serious illness and death. As the fall and winter approach, you should also plan to get your flu vaccine to decrease your risk of infection.

According to the CDC, it is safe to receive both the COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine in the same visit, and it is no longer necessary to wait 14 days between vaccinations. Learn more about this updated guidance here.

Wash and sanitize hands

Wash and Sanitize Hands

Clean your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (two rounds of “Happy Birthday”). If soap and water are not readily available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Wear a mask

Wear a Mask

Wear a face covering with two or more layers that fully covers your nose and mouth when around others. Even if you are vaccinated, it is important to wear a mask in public and crowded settings. In some cases, even vaccinated individuals can spread the virus to others, even if you’re feeling healthy.

Social distance

Social Distance

Outside of your home, maintain at least 6 feet (2 meters) of distance from others. Avoid close contact with people who are sick – even if they live in your household. Remember that keeping distance from others will help protect you and others from getting infected.

Clean and sanitize surfaces

Clean and Sanitize Surfaces

Disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes cell phones, keyboards, doorknobs, countertops, toilets, faucets, sinks and light switches. Common household cleaners that have been approved by the EPA  to eliminate coronavirus may be found here.

Disinfecting shared surfaces can help stop the spread of other respiratory infections, including cold and flu.

Stay home if sick

Stay Home If Sick

Be on alert for symptoms of COVID-19. If you are experiencing a fever, cough, sudden shortness of breath or other symptoms associated with COVID-19 or respiratory illness, please stay home except to get medical care. Most people who get COVID-19 have mild symptoms and can recover in the comfort of their home. Keep away from others if you are ill – even those in your own household.

Avoid crowds (especially indoors)

Avoid Crowds – Especially Indoors

Stay away from large crowds of people and don’t gather in groups. If you do encounter crowds, wear your mask and social distance. Try your best to avoid indoor spaces that are not well-ventilated. Even if you’re vaccinated, it is still possible to become infected with COVID-19.
