It is no secret that being kind brings meaning and joy to others. When you share a smile with a stranger, help your neighbor or give some of what you have to those who need assistance – you are truly making a difference.

Did you know that there are many health benefits associated with kindness? Kindness has been shown to decrease blood pressure and stress levels in the body. It also increases your connection to other people, which will improve your mood and feelings of loneliness. When you are kind, serotonin and dopamine are boosted in your brain. These are neurotransmitters in the brain that give you overall feelings of well-being and satisfaction. Kindness can even release endorphins, which is our body’s natural pain killer.

Here are few ways you can practice kindness:

Speak up for a cause you believe in: Learn more about local initiatives or sign a petition about a cause worthy of your support.

Give your time or talent:Volunteer or give your skills. Fairfield Medical Center volunteers are kind and caring individuals who give from the heart to make a difference in the lives of patients and visitors. Click here to learn more about volunteering at Fairfield Medical Center.

Give goods: Organize a supply drive or donate household items. The FMC Foundation has a pediatric wish list. A gift of toys, games or activity supplies can make a huge difference to families and their child while spending time in the hospital. Click here to view the pediatric wish list.

Give money:Fundraise or donate for a non-profit. The FMC Foundation plays a vital role in supporting access to excellent medical care and wellness programs throughout Fairfield County and the surrounding communities. Donate today or learn more here.

Be kind: compliment a stranger, give your friend a hug, practice patience with a coworker or purchase someone’s meal in the drive-thru line. These small acts of kindness can make a large impact on other people.

Now that you have a few new ways to be kind, ask yourself, “How am I going to practice kindness today?” The health benefits associated with your kindness are beneficial for you. Beyond those health benefits, your small amount of daily kindness is limitless and can bring someone else the positivity they may need that day.
